Lone Pine tripped up at Vasquez

Lone Pine Volleyball drops DML match at Vasquez

The Lone Pine High School Golden Eagles Volleyball team dropped a Desert Mountain League match Tuesday at Vasquez.  Lone Pine heads back to the road Thursday for another DML match in Mammoth.

Coach Mel Joseph’s report:
Action, CA – Lone Pine traveled to Action on Tuesday and fell in four games to the Mustangs. Vasquez won game one 25-11, Lone Pine won game two 25-18. Then in game three with the score 6-3, Lone Pine’s senior middle blocker Katie Lacey came down on a Vasquez player at the net injuring her ankle and have to leave the match. Playing with seven players, one of whom is a Libero, the Lady Eagles had to finish game three with only five players having to take a side out (and a point earned for Vasquez) each time Lone Pine rotated to Lacey’s service rotation. Lone Pine lost game three 25-14. Game 4 Lone Pine placed Libero Lacie Jones into a regular jersey and inserted her into the middle blocker position giving the Lady Eagles six players on the court. Lone Pine lost game four 25-20. With the loss, Lone Pine is now 6-4 in DML, 10-10-2 overall.

“Given the emotional concern for their teammate who left the gym for an area hospital, I was proud of how the girls stuck together and battled through to the end, this says a lot for our maturity and camaraderie”.

Individual Statistics:
Setter Niki Martinez, 9/10 Serving, 2 Aces, 1 Kill, 17 Assists, and 8 Digs.
Outside Hitter Abby Southey, 12/13 Serving, 9 Kills, and 9 Digs.

Lone Pine Coach Mel Joseph
Bishop kept us back on our heels the entire match with their aggressive serving and attacking. We did not bring the right attitude to compete.  The only real highlight for us came in game three when we won a very long rally, had we played the entire match that way the outcome may have been different. This was a great preseason experience, one to build on as we head to the Mammoth Invitational this weekend”.

Mammoth Volleyball @ Yerington

Huskies thrive at Yerington Tournament

submitted by Mammoth Coach John Morris:

The Mammoth Huskies girls volleyball team opened their 2015 season this past weekend with their first entry into the very tough Yerington tournament. The tournament features 20 teams from all over northern Nevada and a few Eastern Sierra teams. Yerington High School, the host team, has won the Nevada state title for their division 6 out of the past 8 years.

The Huskies played very well on Friday winning 2 out of 3 matches and earning a berth to the Gold (top) tournament on Saturday. The Huskies defeated Moapa Valley and Wells and lost a very close and well played  match to Yerington 25-24, 25-20. Mammoth did not fare as well on Saturday losing to Dayton, Lowry and Spanish Springs before finishing with a win vs. Portola.

According to Mammoth head coach John Morris, “This was all about getting to know each other and playing some really tough teams. We have only been practicing for about a week, due to construction of our new gym floor. The Yerington tournament has a reputation for really high quality play and it was a big success for us to make it into the Gold tournament and to play against the best that were there. It was a great early season experience for our team.”

The 2015 Huskies are led by Senior outside hitters Callie Mowat and Taylor Sanders, Senior opposite hitter and defensive specialist Kira Shultz, Senior middle blocker Tatum Sandvigen, Junior setter McKenna Smith and Junior libero Caitlin Young. Mammoth hosts the Mammoth Volleyball Invitational tournament on September 11 and 12 at the newly renovated Mammoth High School gym. 12 teams from Oakhurst to LA plan to attend.
