Kern Valley’s Dynamic Duo Down Bishop

Kern Valley goes deep twice in 14-6 win

Bishop celebrated senior day Tuesday, Kern Valley celebrated the long ball.  The Kern Valley Broncs two stars, Senior Dalton Gallis and Sophomore Zach Bushling both hit home-runs off the library roof in right center field.  Gallis led off the game with a solo shot and Bushling hit a three run homer in the 3rd inning giving KV a 4-2 lead.  The Broncs never looked back.  KV added 4 runs in the 4th, including a 3-run double by Gallis, bronco enemy #1.  Bushling, bronco enemy #2, scored a run in the 5th, then drove in run in the KV 4-run sixth inning.  KV added an insurance run in the 7th, an RBI double by…..that’s right….Dalton Gallis.  Gallis drove in 5 runs on a pair of doubles and the homer, Bushling drove in 4 runs.

The Broncos scored one run in each of the first 4 innings, but could not catch the hot hitting broncs.  Colton Riesen delivered a two out, two run homerun in the bottom of the 7th giving Broncos fans something to cheer about in an otherwise long day.  Justin Hollowell and Brodie Maloney collected RBI’s for Bishop Union.

Rosamond outlasts Bishop in 13 inning thriller

Bishop Union falls to 2-3 in HDL with crushing loss

This High Desert League game had the feel of a must win for Bishop Union, and the scrappy Broncos pushed the unbeaten Roadrunners to 13 innings.  Down 1-0 heading into the 7th inning Bishop scratched out a run to stay alive, a theme that would be repeated three more times.  Colton Riesen scored on a wild pitch evening the game at 1-1.  The Broncos would answer Rosamond runs in the 8th, 10th, and 12 innings.  Rosamond would break through for 3 runs in the 13th, and Bishop’s luck would run out with the tying run on second base.  Rosamond left town with a marathon 7-6 win and the top spot in the High Desert League standings at 5-0.

Both starting pitchers were fantastic.  Bishop Union’s Justin Hollowell and Rosamond’s Tyler Herrick both worked 10 masterful innings.  Both seniors went the limit, only being pulled due to the CIF innings restriction.  Hollowell allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, striking out 8, and walking just 3.  Hollowell was economical with his pitches throwing 128 pitches in the 10 innings of work.  Herrick was great allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, striking out 10, and walking 1.  Herrick racking up 130 pitches in his 10 inning of work.  The Broncos really made Herrick play defense as the pitcher was forced to field a total of 8 ground balls.  The 8 chances coming on a combination of bunts and come-backers.  As good as both starting pitchers were, both took a no decision.  Bishop Union Alex Sipes worked three innings in relief giving up 4 runs on 6 hits.  Sipes was saddled with the loss, but kept Bishop in the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the 12th.  Zach Deprofio worked three innings for Rosamond picking up the win.

The Bronco defense was solid behind Hollowell with fine plays turned in by catch Colton Riesen, left fielder Clyde McCoy, third basemen Jake Traynor and first basemen Brodie Maloney.

Plenty of sunshine at Lake Isabella this past Friday, but Bronco runs where as sparse as the waters of the nearby lake.  With Lake Isabella at historically low levels, bishop dropped both softball games and  the varsity baseball game.  Bishop Union’s varsity teams managed just 2 combined runs.  The lone win Friday was a bronco JV baseball victory.  It’s not all doom and gloom as the Broncos hit Easter break, Bishop was competitive in all the ball games with two more shots at their rivals.  Bishop will wrap up the regular season with a two game set with KV, Tuesday, May 5th and Thursday May 7th.   At Easter Break Bishop varsity baseball and softball teams are even with KV with one High Desert League loss, with everyone trailing league leader Rosamond.  Both Rosamond baseball and softball teams are unbeaten in HDL play at the break.  Bishop will return to HDL play on Tuesday, April 7th with a trip to Rosamond.  All bronco boys varsity baseball games are broadcast live on AM 1230 KBOV and streamed live here at kibskbov.com.

Broncos Steal 2 Games in Frazier

Bishop Softball and Baseball need late rallies to win

A windy and cold day in Frazier Mt Tuesday was nothing new,  the come from behind victories however, were.  Both varsity baseball and softball had to rally late to pull off come from behind wins Tuesday.  Cold temperatures and vicious winds plagued a sun soaked day.

The Bishop Union High School baseball team scratched out a run in the 7th to tie the game at 2 forcing an extra inning where the bronco bats came alive striking for 7 runs.  Aaron Chinzi pitched a complete game striking out 15 falcons.  Chinzi allowed just 5 hits and  2 runs, only one run was earned.  The Junior had fantastic control allowing no walks, and did not have a three ball count on a falcon until the 8th inning.  Chinzi and catcher Colton Riesen kept the falcons off balance all day.  Riesen also helped his pitcher by throwing out two would be base stealers.

Aaron Chinzi. Gary Young Photo

Offensively the broncos were led by freshman Brodie Maloney.  The first baseman doubled in Bishop’s first run in the 3rd inning and drove in the run in the 7th that kept the Broncos alive.  Maloney also singled in an insurance run in the 7-run 8th.  Sophomore call up Patrick Mitton reached base twice scoring both broncos runs in regulation.  Alex Sipes and Justin Hollowell were a big part of the 8th inning collecting RBI doubles but the big blast in the 8th was a bases loaded triple for Colton Riesen.

While Chinzi won the game on the hill for the Broncos, Kevin Holcomb was the hard luck loser from Frazier Mt.  Holcomb and Chinzi locked into a great dual, but Holcomb was pulled after the 7th and the Broncos lit up the falcon bullpen for 7 runs on 5 hits.

The Broncos will now prepare for a trip to rival Kern Valley.  The forecast is calling for high temperatures in the upper 80s Friday, which will be a nice change from Tuesdays frigid conditions.
