Bishop Union will play Fowler for the CIF championship

Freshman Katie “Bugs” Dohnel scored two goals in Tuesday’s Semifinal powering Bishop Union to the CIF Central Section Division 5 Championship match.  The Broncos shut out Orosi  2-0 setting up Saturdays Championship match with Fowler.

The Championship match will be played on Saturday beginning at 5pm in Fowler.

Bishop Union is the #3 seed with a 17-6-1 record.  Fowler improves to 22-3-1 with their 3-1 semifinal win over #4 seed Woodlake.

Bronco Coach Manny Terrasas is quick to credit the Bronco’s strong defensive play, “The Broncos played stellar defense tonight”.

Freshman Katie Dohnel scored the first Bronco goal on a first half penalty kick and later added an insurance goal thanks to a assist from Senior Captain Shelby McKinley.

Dohnel Kicks Bishop Union past Rival Kern Valley

Bishop Union high school girls soccer is heading to the CIF Central Section semifinals.  The Broncos path to the final four included a marathon overtime win over rival Kern Valley.  Katie “Bugs” Dohnel scored on a first half penalty kick putting Bishop Union on top.

Kern Valley tied the match in the second half.  Regulation ending with a 1-1 tie.  The bitter rivals played two 10-minute overtime periods, and one five minute sudden victory period scoreless.  With less than a minute to play in the second sudden victory period, Katie Dohnel scored the game winning goal.  The Broncos now travel to #7 Orosi Tuesday.   A Bronco win Tuesday, punches their ticket to the CIF Central Section Division 5 finals vs. the winner of #1 Fowler and #4 Woodlake.  Bishop Union is the #3 seed.

BUHS Boys Soccer drops playoff match

Bishop Union Boys Soccer falls to Fowler

Bishop Union High School boys soccer team made the long road trip to the Fresno area Tuesday for the opening round of the CIF Central Section Les Schwab Division 5 boys soccer championships.  #6 seed Fowler High school played host to the #11 Bishop Broncos.  Fowler started strong with 2 quick goals in route to a 8-1 victory.  Fowler advances to the second round Thursday hosting Rosamond.  Rosamond, champs of the High Desert League, had a bye into the second round.

Coach’s Comments
” Fowler scored two quick goals within the first five minutes of the match. Bishop settled down and held Fowler scoreless for the rest of the opening half.  At the 30 minute mark of the first half senior captain Brian Lemus scored on a nice arching ball to pull Bishop to within one goal.  The second half of the match was a very different story. Fowler scored 6 unanswered goals.”  Coach Peter Thomsen

Bronco Soccer drills rival Kern Valley

Bishop Union High School Soccer put the wraps on a successful regular season Thursday.  The Bronco Girls completing a undefeated High Desert league championship and the Bronco boys securing a playoff birth.  The Bronco girls scored in the opening seconds of their match with Kern Valley in route to a 5-1 win.  The Bronco Boys controlled their match with rival KV cruising to a 7-0 win.  The boys victory locking up a third place HDL finish.

Coach Manny Terrasas credits his teams overall strong play from Thursday afternoon.  ” The girls played really well. After scoring within the first 30 seconds we slowed a little taking a 2 to 1 lead into halftime.  Once we put in our 3rd goal about 10 minutes into the second half,  we shut down Kern Valley with strong defense and quality passing.”  Bishop coach also praised the strong defense of Ritz Garcia, Emeli Mora, Kori Boxley and Karla Castilla.

Landon Harper opened the scoring at the 37 minute mark. Gage Garcia scored off a header one minute later. The first half ended with Bishop leading 2-0.

Second half goals were scored by Tony Sears, Landon Harper, Mario Velasco, and 2 goals from Ethan Lamb (his first goal coming off a penalty kick). Ethan normally a defender scored his first goals in his high school career.

In goal for the shutout was Jerry Mendez.

Bishop concluded league play with a 4-4 record and third place.
Our next match will be an away CIF playoff game on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Bishop Union High School Soccer teams enjoyed a great day in the sunshine Tuesday winning a pair of HDL games.  The Bronco girls shined the brightest on a sun-soaked afternoon winning the High Desert League championship with a 2-1 win.  As the unseasonably warm afternoon gave way to a cool early evening the Bronco Boys fought back from an early deficit winning 2-1.   Next up the teams will celebrate senior day tomorrow (Thursday, February 11th) playing host to rival Kern Valley.

Coach Manny Terrasas and the Bronco Girls secured the outright HDL championship Tuesday with a solid 2-1 win over Frazier Mt.  Bishop Union jumped on top 2-0 in the first half and held on for the win.  Goals were scored by Freshman Katie Dohnel, and “The Boss” Sara Voss with Jaden Piper assisting on the Voss goal giving Bishop Union the early lead.  Coach Terrasas credits the strong effort of the defense including goalkeeper Dulcinea Vasquez.  Terrasas also thanks the Bronco fans for their support.

The Bishop Union varsity girls will now play for an unbeaten HDL season Thursday hosting rival Kern Valley.  The Broncos will be honoring their seniors Thursday afternoon.  The match begins at 3pm at BUHS’s John Schwab field.

Frazier Mt entered the match with a league record of 5-1 and in second place. This game was a critical game for both teams with Frazier Mt. needing a win to contend for first place in league and Bishop needing a win to hold onto third place with a CIF playoff birth on the line.

Frazier Mt opened the scoring with a goal 23 minutes into the match.  Bishop refused to give-up and responded with their first goal 9 minutes later when captain Brian Lemus put the ball into the back of the net on an assist from Bryan Gonzales.

The half ended in a 1-1 tie.

At the 8:30 mark Bishop scored the go ahead goal in the second half on a score by Cesar Solario coming off an assist from Brian Lemus.

Bishop, playing down a player in the second half, held Frazier Mt scoreless to secure the win.  Bishop keeper Jerry Mendez made a number of critical saves throughout the match.  Defensive standouts for Bishop were Alejandro Ruiz, Bryan Gonzales, and Gage Garcia.

Bishop boys play Kern Valley Thursday with the opportunity to secure third place in league and lock-up a CIF playoff spot. The home game starts at 5:00.

Coaches Comments, “It has been encouraging to see the team develop as a team as the season has progressed. Even though we have faced a number of challenges our boys have refused to give-up.”

Bronco Girls Play does not “Waffle” in Cal City

Bishop Union Girls Soccer stays unbeaten in HDL play

Bishop Union High School Girls soccer improves to 6-0 in High Desert League play.  The win secures a share of the HDL championship as both Frazier Mt and Kern Valley have two losses with just two games to go.  The Broncos HDL dominance continues with the 6-0 shut-out at California City high school Thursday.  The Broncos girls were treated to waffles this past weekend prior to appearing on the Saturday Sports Roundup.  Junior Defender Karla Castilla inspired the “Waffle-Fest” Saturday, and clearly the waffles were key to the victory at California City.  (note-you can listen to the Saturday Sports show featuring the Bronco Girls Soccer team by clicking on the link on the left.)

Bishop Union made quick work of California City Thursday with five more goals from super-freshman Katie Dohnel.  The five goals at Cal City giving Dohnel 47 on the season.  Bronco Defender Ritz Garcia got in on the scoring collecting her first goal of the season.

Bishop Union closes out HDL play with key home matches with Frazier Mt (Tuesday, Feb 9th) and Kern Valley (Thursday, Feb 11th).  Both Frazier and Kern Valley are tied for second in the HDL with 4-2 records.   A win or a tie in either match gives Coach Manny Terrasas and the Broncos the HDL championship.

The Bishop Union high school varsity boys soccer team dropped a tough road match at California City Thursday.  Coach Peter Thomsen reports that Cal City beat Bishop 1-0 scoring the winning goal with just 4 minutes remaining in the match .

Coach Thomsen noted the play of goalkeeper Jerry Mendez who made several saves.  The loss moves Bishop into a tie with Cal City for 3rd place in the High Desert League standings.  Bishop finishes league play next week with critical home games against Frazier Mt (Tuesday, Feb 9th) and Kern Valley (Thursday, Feb 11th).

Bishop Union High School Varsity Girls

Bishop Union High School Girls Soccer team improves to 5-0 in High Desert League play with another dominate win.  Thursday afternoon the Broncos shut out Rosamond 5-0.  Sophomore Sara Voss scored three goals as Bishop Union improved their overall record to 12-6-1.  In addition to Sara’s big day, Freshman Katie Dohnel added two more goals to her season total giving her an even 40.  Dohnel also logged an assist.  Kailyn Boxley, Shelby McKinley, and Jaden Piper each had an assist.

Bishop Union will be in action next week on Thursday, February 4th traveling to California City then hosting Frazier Mt on Tuesday, February 9th.

The Broncos battled the High Desert Leagues top team to the wire Thursday, losing 3-1.  Rosamond stays atop  the HDL standings with a 5-0 record.  Bishop Union stays in the third spot at 2-3 behind Rosamond and Frazier Mt (3-1).  Coach Peter Thomsen reports that Rosamond opened the scoring with a goal in the first half at the 16:22 minute mark.  Bishop Union tied the score in the second half at the 8:56 mark on an unassisted goal by Brian Lemus.  Rosamond completed the scoring with goals at 19:20 and 24:00 minutes.

Coach Louis Martinez’s team fell to Rosamond Thursday 3-1.  Coach Martinez credited his boys for playing hard, but the Broncos were short-handed with no subs available.  Coach Martinez reports that the lone Bronco goal was scored by Noah Martinez in the 50th minute.  Coaches Comments, “Player(s) of the game, Israel Santana and Josh Hembree. One game left, vs Mammoth on February 12th, for the Sierra Cup!”

Bishop Union wins key HDL matches at Kern Valley

Both Bishop Union high school varsity soccer clubs shut out rival Kern Valley Tuesday.  The Bronco Girls moved to 4-0 in league play while handing Kern Valley their first High Desert League loss, 2-0.  The Bronco Boys improve to 2-2 in HDL play also winning 2-0.

Coach Manny Terrasas reports that Bishop Union improves to 4-0 in HDL play with a tough 2-0 win.  Freshman Katie Dohnel and senior captain Shelby McKinley scored goals with Isabel Munoz and Jaden Piper assisting.  Coach Terrasas says the Broncos, “Played solid football the entire game.”

Coach Peter Thomsen relays that Bishop Unions goals were scored by Abraham Santana and Alan Torres.  Goalie Kevin Santana was in goal recording the shut out.  The Broncos improve to 2-2 in High Desert League play.   Bishop Union will continue HDL play Thursday, January 28th hosting Rosamond.  Girls Varsity will play at 3pm followed by the boys at 5pm at BUHS’s John Schwab field.

Bishop Union High School girls soccer improves to 3-0 in High Desert League play with a 1-0 win at Frazier Mt.  Coach Manny Terrasas is quick to credit the fine play of the Bronco defense led by Kori Boxley, Emeli Mora, Karla Castilla, and Ritz Garcia.  Tied 0-0 at the half the Broncos scored the only goal of the match in the second half with freshman Katie “Bugs” Dohnel scoring with an assist from Brittany Santana.

The win moves the Broncos to 3-0 in HDL play, even with rival Kern Valley.  Both Bishop and KV notched 1-0 wins over Frazier Mt. While the Bishop/Kern Valley rivalry has not been a fierce one in soccer, KV looks to challenge Bishop in 2016.   Bishop Union will travel to Kern Valley next week with a trip to Lake Isabella set for Tuesday, January 26th.

Thursday the Bronco Varsity boys could not maintain the momentum of their come-form-behind win Tuesday over California City.  Bishop Union fell to Frazier Thursday 3-0.  Bishop Union Coach Peter Thomsen said, “The first half was an evenly played match.  Frazier scored a late goal to take a 1-0 lead into half.  Frazier scored on two second half goals to secure the win.  Bishop had a number of drives at goal throughout the match but was unable to score.  Despite the loss Bishop remains in third place in league.  We have critical games next week against Kern (Tuesday away) and Rosamond (Thursday home).”

Bishop Union Boys and Girls Soccer top Cal City

Heavy rain fell throughout the morning Tuesday, but the clouds cleared just in time for the Bishop Union-California City soccer matches to be played.  The Bronco Varsity Girls made quick work of the Ravens with Freshman sensation Katie Dohnel scoring just seconds into the match.  Dohnel would finish the match with 7 goals in the Bronco Girls 16-0 win.  While the Bronco Girls took the drama out of the match early, the Varsity Boys notched their first High Desert League win in dramatic come from behind fashion winning 4-3.

Boys Varsity coach Peter Thomsen reports that California City scored 3 unanswered first half goals scoring at at the 16:46 minute, 32:00 minute, and 36:05 minute marks.  Down 3-0 at the break the Broncos mounted a dramatic comeback. Thomsen indicates that Junior Mario Velasco opened the scoring for Bishop in the second half by scoring at the 3:30 mark on an assist from Brian Lemus and Alan Torres.  15 minutes later Velasco scored an unassisted goal. Velasco completed his hat trick and tied the game at the 21:20 minute mark of the second half.  With 1:30 remaining in the match Landon Harper put Bishop Union into the lead for good when he scored an un-assisted goal.

Bishop Soccer splits with Mammoth

Bishop Union High School played host to the Mammoth Huskies Thursday at John Schwab Field.  Freshman Katie Dohnel found the back on the net an amazing 8 times pacing the Bronco Girls to a 10-1 win.  The Varsity boys grabbed an early lead, but fell 4-3.  Bishop Union will return to High Desert League play on Tuesday, January 19th with a home match with California City.

Coach Peter Thomson, “Bishop opened the scoring at the 2:45 mark when Juan Solario scored on an assist from Tony Sears. 20 minutes later Bishop doubled their lead when Mario Velasco scored an unassisted goal. Mammoth responded with 3 unanswered goals to take a 1 goal lead at half. Bishop tied the score 2 min into the second half on an unassisted goal by Alan Torres. The score remained tied until the last minute of the match when Mammoth scored the go ahead goal.”
