Michael Kubiak Hits Two Inside the Park Home Runs as Broncos Beat Serpents

The Bishop Broncos hosted the Mineral County Serpents in a non-league game on Thursday, beating the team from Hawthorne, NV 14-4 over six innings.

Senior, Michael Kubiak was the star player for the Broncos. The veteran shortstop scored two inside the park home runs. Although there were errors involved in both instances, Kubiak’s speed was on display as he streaked past the bags on two different occasions.

Errors proved to be the difference between the two teams, as the Serpents had eight total on the day. Seven runs were scored off of the eight errors.

Kubiak was not the only Bronco with a lively bat Thursday. 3rd basemen, Cal Omohundro and Jalen Waterson were effective at the plate as well. Omohundro hit a 2 RBI double in the third inning after he struck a liner to left field. As for Waterson, the left-handed batter crushed a ball over the right field wall for a home-run.

Thursday was an efficient day for the Bronco pitchers. Sophomore, Ace Selters pitched four innings, surrendering just one run over three innings pitched. However, Selters did run into a bit of trouble in the fourth inning after he walked multiple batters and loaded the bases. Head coach, Steve Omohundro visited the mound and elected to leave the young pitcher in the game. Selters then gave up a 3 RBI triple after the ball was smacked into the outfield. The score was 10-4 after the fourth inning.

Landon Kruse pitched in relief and threw two innings. After initially struggling with his command and location, Kruse was dialed in. The Sophomore’s fastball was working well for him, as he struck out five batters in two innings.

Up next for the Broncos, a trip to California City for a High Desert League match up.

Bishop Wrestling at Lancaster

Bishop Bronco Wrestling

Last Saturday the Bishop Bronco Wrestling team traveled to Lancaster to wrestle in the Antelope Valley Wrestling Tournament. This was the last tournament before the High Desert
League Finals which will be held in Bishop on Wednesday, March 11th. The Bronco team consisted of:
Freshman Nolan Conway at 108 lbs
Sophomore Joseph Mayhugh at 147 lbs
Junior Orlando Ruelas at 172 lbs
Freshman Gabe Shoshone at 222 lbs
Freshman Nolan Conway at 108 lbs received a first round bye, putting him into the semi‐finals in just his 5th match as a Bronco. Nolan came out on fire, scoring 2 takedowns and 3 near falls in
an exciting, high‐scoring match. Nolan came out on top, winning by a score of 19‐15. Nolan lost in the finals, but was happy to have earned a 2nd place medal.
Wrestling at 147 lbs., sophomore Joseph Mayhugh started his first match well, but made a crucial error and was pinned by an opponent from Quartz Hill. Joseph dominated his next two opponents, putting him the match for 3rd place against the same Quartz Hill opponent who had pinned him in his first match. Again, Joseph was the more aggressive wrestler and – with no crucial errors this time – pinned his opponent, earning a 3rd place medal.
Junior Orlando Ruelas at 172 lbs was disappointed in his first match where he was pinned, but the coaches were happy that he took his opponent down 2 times. In his 2nd match, Orlando wrestled an exciting match that was tied several times. Late in the last period, with both wrestlers nearly exhausted, Orlando executed a “nearly perfect” takedown to win the match. This win put him in the match for 3rd place, but he was forced to forfeit as he did not feel well.
Freshman Gabe Shoshone, having only wrestled once before, lost both his matches.
Coach Joseph said, “We really liked how some of the wrestlers performed. We aren’t really that interested in wins, what we really want is for the wrestlers to move well, take shots and score
points. ”
The Broncos next action will be an away dual meet against Kern Valley this coming Thursday (January 29th).  Weight ins begin at 4, wrestling at 5pm.
