Bishop Girls Soccer Wins HDL

BUHS Girls Soccer wins the HDL title

The Bishop varsity girls soccer team traveled to Bakersfield Thursday defeating rival Kern Valley claiming the outright High Desert League title.  Bishop won 2-0 improving to 7-0-1 in league play.   Scoring goals for the Broncos were senior Brenda Gonzalez and sophomore Karla Castilla.  Coach Manny Terasas commented, “The team played well. Great play all around. Kila Miller stepped up in the back playing great defense. Brenda Gonzalez had a great goal from a free kick about 25 yards out.  The other goal came off a great run by Kailyn Boxley. She took a shot to the far post. The keeper for Kern made a great save, but the rebound was put away nicely by Karla Castilla.”  Terasas closed by saying, “I am very proud of the girls.  We had some key injuries in the game but the subs filled in nicely.”

The Bishop varsity boys defeat Kern Valley 8-2, with 4 goals for senior Elijah Alexander, two goals for freshman Diego Solorio, and one goal each for seniors Joe Domke and Joey Griego.

Bronco Girls Soccer at Bakersfield

BUHS Girls finish as Runners up at Rebel Kick Off

The Bishop Union High School girls varsity traveled to the Rebel Kick Off Tournament in Bakersfield.  Assistant Coach Kathy Mckinley indicates that the tournament gave the Broncos  a chance to play teams more at our level from the central section.  The Broncos won three games in our section and tied one, putting the Bronco  through to the championship game.

The championship game was against a Division 2 team who are ranked 70 in the state of California.   Coach McKinley says, “We lost 4-0 to a very skilled athletic team, and even though we lost this game it was by the far the best I have seen the girls play so far this season. We are down to three seniors this year and two didn’t go to this tournament. The one senior that was there Alicia Campos did an incredible job the whole tournament along with Junior Captain Kristy Dohnel, and Sophomore Karla Castilla these three girls led their team showing outstanding work ethic and team work even in what was a hard fought final game. This team never gives up. It is a quality that will take them far this season.”

Bishops first game we played Mira Monte and won 2-0 with goals from Kailyn Boxley and Emily Ball, the second game the Broncos tied  South high school  1-1 with the one goal coming from a brilliant corner from Alicia Campos.
Saturday the Broncos faced Delano in the morning winning 5-0 after a little bit of a slow start, goals from Kailyn, Sarah Voss, and Tami Anderson with assists from Brittany Santana and Kailyn Boxley.
The second game Saturday was against North High School where Bishop  won again 3-0 with goals from  Chloe Almeida, Sarah Voss and Alicia Campos.
Coach McKinley commented, “Tournaments take a whole team, and most of the members don’t get mentioned in the media especially defenders but I would like to give special kudos to Maritza Garcia for her untiring and relentless work on the back line. We started our season playing some pretty tough teams and this tournament was a boost to us in many ways, primarily getting a few wins under our belt but also we saw the younger players grow in confidence. We were missing two of our starters, two players that often score goals for us so without them to rely on the team had to step up and find other ways to score. The girls did that and so we now go into league with a much more confident, stronger team.”

We play Rosamond at home on Tuesday, January 13th.

Bishop Girls Varsity Soccer at the Eagle Cup

Bishop varsity girls soccer played at the Eagle Cup in Lancaster this weekend, December 5 and 6th. This is a two Saturday tournament so they play again next Saturday.   Bishop lost their first game 4-1 to a very good school from Pasadena; Maranatha High School. The goal scorer was Kailyn Boxley.  Bishop only had two shots on target during the game, the Maranatha team had great ball control and were able to keep possession the majority of the game.

The second game was against Community Charter from the LA school district.  Bishop lost 2-1 with their one goal coming from Senior Midfielder Alicia Campos. This was a particularly exciting goal for Alicia as she had surgery this summer and has been working hard to get back to her original form.
