Bishop Lose Pivotal Game Against Kern Valley

Last night was a heart breaker. In a must win game against Bishop’s bitter rival, Kern Valley, Robert Chavez’s team came up short.

When play began, Bishop got off to a torrid start. The Broncos quickly scored eight points, forcing Kern Valley Head Coach, Brian Christianson to burn a timeout.

The timeout didn’t help too much, as the Broncos added to their lead until it reached double-digits.

Throughout the first quarter and midway into the second, Bishop dominated the game. Both Kenyan Piper and Clay Omohundro were hot from deep, combining for four three pointers in the first half.

However, the fun didn’t last long for Bishop. Coach Christianson’s team rallied back to cut the deficit.

With about four minutes to go in the second quarter, Kern Valley trailed by eleven. A combination of Shelton Alley, Davin Lee, and Kaden Preston fought back to tie the ball game up right before halftime.

Bishop went into the third quarter and held onto the lead for a couple of minutes. The game turned into a back and fourth affair until the start of the fourth quarter.

Kern Valley blew the game open in the final portion of the game. Three pointers rained down on the Broncos defense, and the team was unable to cope with the onslaught. Kaden Preston, Shelton Alley, and Ryan Walker were sinking nearly every shot the three of them put up.

The final score finished 77-62. Bishop will finish fourth place in the High Desert League.

Clay Omohundro received player of the game honors for his excellent shooting. The Junior has really made strides this past month of the season, especially when it comes to creating his own shot.

Jaydan Braithwaite also had a good game against Kern Valley. The senior knocked down two three point shots, and swished a couple of mid-range jumpers as well.

Bishop Snap Losing Streak Against Boron

The Bishop Broncos blew out the Boron Bobcats for the second time this season Friday evening. The first meeting was a forty-one point route for Bishop. The final score of the game played a month ago was 69-28. Robert Chavez’s team put up 69 points in the second game as well. However, the final score in this game was a little bit closer with the match up ending 69-42.

Both teams played evenly throughout most of the first half. However, Bishop led the entire time, doing a nice job of sharing the ball and knocking down open looks.

Bishop’s standout player in the first quarter was Junior, Clay Omohundro, who drained back to back three pointers toward the start of the game. He scored eight points inside the first three minutes of the game.

The first half ended with Bishop holding on to a small lead. When the second half began, Bishop came out guns blazing. The Bronco’s lead quickly ballooned to a double-digit advantage early in the third quarter.

The star of the second half was undoubtedly Sophomore, Kenyan Piper, who was scoring at will inside the paint. There were many instances where Piper would receive the ball at the top of the arc and explode into the paint past the Boron rim protectors.

Bishop snapped a three-game losing streak with their victory against Boron. Up next for the Broncos, a pivotal match up against Kern Valley, who are one spot ahead of Bishop for third place in the High Desert League. If Bishop want any chance of hosting a home playoff game, they have to win tomorrow night.

Struggling Broncos Drop Second Straight Game Against Desert

The Bishop Broncos suffered their second straight loss last night against the Desert Scorpions losing 62-45. Unfortunately for Bishop, the loss all but eliminates them from having a chance to win the High Desert League.

Bishop got out to an early lead, hitting their first few shots. However, the advantage did not last for long. Desert took control of the game in the second quarter and never looked back.

The reason Bishop’s opponent was able to get out to a big lead in the first half was because of Desert’s shooting. Senior, Javier Elliot hit back to back three pointers in the second quarter, and continued his effective shooting throughout the quarter hitting a total of four three-pointers in the first half.

When Elliot wasn’t hitting shots beyond the arc, he was driving inside the paint whenever he pleased. There were many times throughout the game where Elliot had the ball on the left wing and would slash into the paint to create an easy layup for himself.

Another player who was hitting shots throughout the game was Marquis Morris. The Desert guard was the recipient of quite a few wide-open looks from three thanks to Elliott’s penetration which collapsed the defense.

The Broncos did a good job on Desert’s best player in the first half. Emil Rogers, who is averaging a double-double, was a non-factor inside thanks to Luke McClean and Tristan Valle’s interior defense. The Scorpions would often throw the ball inside to Rogers to try an get easy looks. However, every time he got the ball inside, McClean and Valle were there to stave off the big fella’s efforts.

Bishop’s stout interior defense fell apart in the second half. Emil Rogers was able to score three straight buckets to start off the third quarter. The senior continued to dominate inside in the second half.

Although Bishop did not have the best game, there were still some positives. Luke McClean, who had a bad night from beyond the arc was able to make up for it on the defensive side of the ball. There was a span where McClean had three straight steals on three possessions. A few plays later, McClean had two blocks in one sequence.

Jaydan Braithwaite had a good game defensively as well. The senior was a pesky presence with his excellent perimeter defense. He won player of the game honors thanks to his hustle.

Clay Omohundro performed well in the game. The young Junior came off of a rough game against Rosamond on Tuesday in which he had difficulty connecting on his shots. This time, Omohundro hit jumpers and did a nice job creating baskets for himself off of the dribble.

Bishop will face California City on Tuesday for their next game in the High Desert League.

Bishop Destroy Boron for Eighth Win of the Season

The Bishop Broncos cruised to a 69-28 victory over the Boron Bobcats last night in the fourth High Desert League game of the season.

Bishop led the game from the start and never looked back.

Within five seconds, the Broncos were able to score two points thanks to a Johnny Torres steal and score. About ten seconds later, Bishop added to their lead when Sophomore, Kenyan Piper snatched the ball and took it all the way to the basket for an easy pair of points.

The early lead would set the tone for the rest of the night.

Boron made many mistakes when trying to set up their offense. It seemed as though every time the Bobcats tried to send the ball inside, a Bronco was there to either deflect the ball or steal it. The careless passing on the part of the Bobcats allowed Bishop to push the tempo quickly and finish on the break after forcing turnovers.

One major point of concern for the Broncos going in to tonight’s game related to the absence of Blaine Spoonhunter, the team’s best defender, who is no longer with the team. Spoonhunter’s length and hustle will definitely be missed, but if yesterday’s game is a sample of what is to come defensively, the team may end up being able to handle the loss of such a quality player.

The two best defensive players yesterday were Luke McClean and Jaydan Braithwaite. McClean did a nice job of altering shots inside the paint, while Braithwaite demonstrated his quickness, cutting off passing lanes and poking the ball away from the Boron ball handlers.

Offensively, the best player on the court was Kenyan Piper, who has been tremendous all season long. Piper hit four three pointers on the night, and had quite a few nice plays driving inside the paint and finishing.

Another player who stepped up, was Johnny Torres, who made his first start of the season. Torres demonstrated an ability to knock down the mid range jumper all evening. If Bishop have a weakness, it is shooting. Torres will need to continue to show that he can hit his jumper in order to supplement the team’s lack of shooting for the rest of the year.

Up next for the Broncos, a rivalry game against the Kern Valley Broncs, who have a 2-2 High Desert League record. The game will be an away game on Friday at 7:30.

Broncos Streak Past the Scorpions in the First Round of CIF-CS Play

The Bishop Broncos Boys Basketball team have advance to the second round of the CIF Playoffs for Division 5. Bishop beat the Desert Scorpions in their third meeting of the year against the team from Edwards Airforce Base. It was a battle between the second and third placed teams in the High Desert League, with the lower seeded team upsetting the Scorpions 68-62.

Bishop’s Boys Team played perhaps their best game of the season last night. The main concepts that Bishop executed well yesterday were passing, movement off the ball, defense, and scoring off of turnovers. One player who epitomized all of those traits in the first round of CIF was Blaine Spoonhunter, who was constantly in motion, active on the defensive end, and set up his teammates for assists during all four quarters.

Perhaps Spoonhunter’s best play of the night came when he turned the ball over on a pass to the left wing, and sprinted back to block a clear-cut layup. After the rejection, the ball was quickly thrown down to the offensive end, and Spoonhunter scored on a layup from the right side.

Bishop began to pull away at the beginning of the third quarter, getting their lead up to fourteen at one point. The Broncos were able to capitalize off of some bad Scorpion passes, which led to easy buckets.

The large lead slowly dwindled as the Broncos were scoring two pointers, and the Scorpions were answering with three pointers. About midway through the fourth quarter, Bishop lost the lead, and trailed 56-55. The Broncos lost their lead because of Desert point guard, Jaleel Walker, who hit back to back three pointers. On Walker’s second three point attempt, he had enough focus to drain a three from the right wing while being run off the line by a charging Bronco player. The Junior point guard converted the four point play, and the game was tied up. The Broncos then lost the lead a few plays later, but ended up assuming control of the game late thanks to Cal Omohundro’s clutch free-throws.

Bishop will now head to Firebaugh to take on the Eagles in the seocond round of CIF Central Section play. We will have the coverage of this game on 1230 AM KBOV at 7:00 PM Friday night.

Bishop Hold Off Desert’s Late Surge to Clinch Victory

After losing against Rosamond High School last Friday, the Bishop Broncos Boys basketball team responded with a much needed victory against the Desert Scorpions. The victory has revitalized the team’s hopes of finishing second in the High Desert League.

Bishop were able to fend off a Desert team who nearly overcame a sixteen point deficit, cutting the Bronco’s lead all the way down to one point with 1:30 remaining in the game. However, the Broncos hunkered down on the defensive end, forcing a late turnover which sealed the game in favor of Bishop. The game finished 52-49.

The game between the two teams was quite different from the away game at Edwards Air Force Base, where the Scorpions were hitting their threes and scoring inside the paint.

This time around, Bishop clogged up the lane, forcing Desert into shooting threes. A stroke of luck was on the side of the team from the Owens Valley, as Desert’s jumpers were not falling.

Additionally, Desert’s inability to take care of the ball was a big reason why Bishop won. The Scorpions often moved the ball around lazily, with many passes flat and ill-advised. These poor passes were often stolen and finished in transition for easy baskets. Junior, Blaine Spoonhunter played inspired on the defensive end, with three blocks, key defensive rebounds, and steals.

Luke McClean did a solid job distributing the ball into the Denny’s Bronco Slam Player of the Game, Cal Omohundro, who positioned himself in the right areas for easy points. Not only did Omohundro do a good job scoring, he was excellent when it came to boxing out and snagging rebounds.

Bishop’s next game is this Friday against Cal City, who are undefeated in the High Desert League.
