Broncos sweep Frazier Mt

Bishop Union Baseball and Softball take down Frazier

April 25, 2016
By Arnie Palu

Friday’s High Desert league home opening ball games began with sunshine and closed with wind and rain.  Bishop Union High School’s baseball and softball teams excelled in all weather conditions sweeping Frazier Mt.  The varsity boys and junior varsity girls put their games out of reach early with the varsity girls winning in walk off fashion.  The JV boys had the day off as Frazier Mt is not fielding a JV squad.
This week is a big one for the Broncos as they continue their home stand hosting rival Kern Valley Tuesday and Rosamond Friday.  The Varsity boys games are broadcast live on AM 1230 KBOV and streamed live here through the listen live link.

Bishop Union Girls Basketball wins HDL Championship

Bronco Girls beat rival KV going 8-0

by Arnie Palu
February 17, 2016

Bishop Union High School girls basketball secured a perfect 8-0 High Desert league season with a impressive 59-47 win Tuesday night at rival Kern Valley.  Kern Valley’s packed gymnasium was hoping the Broncs could split the HDL crown with Bishop, but the Broncos used great team defense, clutch 3-point shooting, and steady 4th quarter free-throw shooting securing back to back HDL basketball championships.

The Broncos overcame a rocky start Tuesday night including a scary moment for MVP candidate Maria Jimenez.  In the games opening minutes, Jimenez grabbed one of her 16 rebounds before falling flat on her back, with her head smacking the hardwood.  Jimenez stayed down on the court for several tense moments before making a wobbly trip to the Bronco bench.  With Jimenez restricted to the sideline, Kern Valley moved ahead 13-11 at the end of the 1st quarter.

In the second quarter Bishop seniors Sabrina Barlow and Cienna Martinez sparked the Bronco offense.  Martinez connected on the first of her three 3-point baskets giving Bishop Union a 14-13 lead.  The Broncos would never look back.  Barlow, expending major energy on the defensive end, drilled a clutch 3 helping Bishop Union open a 25-16 lead.  Barlow finished the game with 13 points while drawing the difficult assignment of defending Kern Valley’s Rebecca Gallis.  Gallis, daughter of coach Bill Gallis, finished with a game high 35 points, on 33 shots.   Bishop Union took a 28-20 lead into halftime.

In the second half the Bronco underclassman stepped up big time.  Sophomore point guard Topah Scherer nailed a key 3-point shot and Little Eva Lent dominated the boards pulling down a team high 17 rebounds.  Freshman Drew Dondero provided strong support off the Broncos bench logging 10 rebounds.

Showing the composure of a true champion the Broncos withstood several physical Kern Valley fourth quarter fouls.  Bishop Union calmly took to the free-throw line throughout the 4th quarter with Sabrina Barlow hitting 6 free-throws and Maria Jimenez, Little Eva Lent, and Topah Scherer all connecting on a pair.

First year coaches Tara Auld and Alice Bruck provided steady leadership in the hostile environment guiding Bishop Union to the hard fought victory.  It’s now on to the playoffs where Bishop Union will challenge the field in Division 4 of the CIF Central Section.  The parings will be announced Friday with the Bronco Girls (15-2 overall) figuring to be one of the top seeds.
