Spring Playoff Update

Playoffs, we are talking about Playoffs

It’s spring sports playoff time. The CIF southern sections baseball and softball playoffs begin this week. The CIF central section postseason continues for golf and track for student athletes at Bishop Union High School.

Bishop Union high school senior Sean Mitton is playing today (May 19th) in the CIF Central section individual championships. Mitton is playing today at River Island Country Club in Porterville. Mitton was a part of the Broncos CIF championship team in 2014 and led the team to a runner up finish this year.

The Bishop Union 1600 meter boys relay team will travel to Clovis this Saturday (May 23rd) for the Central Section Maters meet. Joey Griego, Logan Stephenson, Carson Reid and Collin Batchelder will run Saturday night at Buchanan high school.

Lone Pine High schools softball team plays today (May 19th) in the Southern Section Division 6 wildcard round. Lone Pine travels to Brentwood today. The winner of today’s wildcard game travels to Anaheim on Thursday for the opening round of the playoffs. Waiting for the winner is #1 seed Savanna high school.

Lee Vining and Big Pine softball are in the Southern Section Division 7 playoffs. Lee Vining the #3 team in the Hi-Lo league travels to Lucerne Valley today for a wildcard game. A Lee Vining win would send them to University Prep in Victorville on Thursday. Big Pine #2 in the Hi-Lo league will travel to Pasadena on Thursday for their opening round game with St. Monica Academy.

Mammoth will make the long road trip to Fillmore on Friday in the CIF southern section division 6 baseball playoffs. Mammoth is an at-large selection from the Desert Mountain league. Fillmore won the Frontier league this season.

The Lee Vining baseball team opens play Thursday at Riverside Prep in the Southern Section Division 7 championships.  The Tigers finished as runners up in the Hi-Lo league.

Big Pine splits double header with Immanuel Christian

Warriors and Crusaders will now square off in a winner take all Hi-Lo league championship game Friday.

Big Pine’s Gena Lewis tossed a nifty 4 hitter, while striking out 6 and walking only 1 in the 5 inning first game.  After Melissa Barlow’s lead-off triple over the centerfielder’s head in the bottom of the first, Lewis followed followed with a hard single. Paaku’u Dewey reached 1st on a strikeout and passed ball on the Immanuel
catcher, Sienna Gutierrez had a 2 run double. Kaylee Simpson singled putting Big Pine up  4-0. That was all Lewis would need, as she faced only 9 batters the first 3 innings.

The Warriors will travel to Ridgecrest to play Immanuel Christian one more time, with a chance to take the championship if they come home with the win.  Game time is Friday evening at 6:00 PM. The Warriors have also guaranteed themselves a CIF-SS Softball Playoff spot, clinching at least 2nd Place. Southern Section brackets will be released on Monday.

Warriors, Tigers battle on Fishmas Eve

Big Pine travels to Lee Vining in Hi-Lo action

The Big Pine warriors made the short trip to Lee Vining for Hi-Lo league play this past Friday.  The softball teams split the double- header while the Lee Vining tigers took both games in baseball.

Big Pine Splits with Trona

Warriors softball wins, baseball falls at Trona

Big Pine split a pair of games at Trona Tuesday.  The softball team dominated the tornadoes while the baseball team fell victim to a Trona walk off win.  Big Pine will be back in action on Friday with a trip to Lee Vining for a Hi-Lo league dual on Fishmas Eve.  Double header action on Friday with games beginning at 1 and 3pm.

The game was 0-0 till the 5th inning when Dominic Santiago scored from first base on a double from Juan Meza giving Big Pine a 1-0 lead.  The warriors gave up the lead in the bottom of the 6th on two errors going down 3-1.  Big Pine retook the lead in the top of the 7th 4-3, thanks to runs scored by Eric Fairley, Dominic Santiago and Juan Meza.  The Warriors allowed 2 runs in the bottom of 7th falling 5-4.  Juan Meza had a fine day at the plate going 3 for 4 with a double and 2 singles driving in a run.  Dominic Santiago finished 2 for 3.  Jacob Bacoch pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing 2 earned runs, striking out 12.

Big Pine’s Gena Lewis had a big game at the plate(1 home run, a triple, single, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI), pitching (7 strike-outs, only 4 hits and only 1 ball hit into the outfield for a base hit), and fielding (10 assists and 2 put-outs). Jamie Robinson (triple and 2 singles, 3 runs scored and 1 RBI), Melissa Barlow (home run, single, walk, 4 runs scored and an RBI), and Sienna Gutierrez (2 singles, a walk, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI).  AnahKee Mason 1 for 4 with a base on balls,1 run scored and 1 RBI. Kaylee Simpson 1 for 4 with a base on balls and 1 RBI.
