History Day a Huge Success in Inyo County

Inyo County’s History Day Contest was held on March 14th, 2019. Ten posters, four websites, one research paper and eleven exhibits covering a variety of topics captured this year’s contest theme of Triumph and Tragedy.

Students were judged on the historical quality, relation to theme, clarity of presentation, and compliance with NHD rules. They also participated in interviews, explaining the process they used to create their projects. The following students will be advancing to the state competition in May:

  • Ruby Randall, Bishop Elementary
  • Cora Van Nest, Kaki Saulque and Haiden Mull (group project), Home Street Middle School
  •   Mylee Patton, Lo Inyo Elementary School
  • Sierra Kingsford and Princess Luna (group project), Lo Inyo Elementary School
  • Stephanie Valdez and Jaciel Isidro (group project), Lo Inyo Elementary School
  • Garrett WIlkinson, Damian Kingsford and Noe Rivera (group project), Lone Pine High School

Thank you to coaches Dustin Ryan, Meghan Fuchs, Nadine Harry, Bob Heist, Megan Wilkinson, Sarah Civitano and Sarah Fogarty for working with their students to prepare them for the competition. In addition, ICOE would like to thank Ilissa Twomey, Lo Lyness, Mini Doonan and Kathy Zach for judging the event.

Congratulations to all student participants!

NIHD, BUHS DEVELOPING PARTNERSHIP FOR STUDENT HEALTH

By Seth Conners

According to Barbara Laughon at NIHD, a budding partnership between Northern Inyo Healthcare District and Bishop Union High School that could give students access to on-campus healthcare took center stage at Wednesday evening’s NIHD’s Board of Directors meeting.
An unexpected offering of thanks from BUHS Football Coach Arnie Palu set the tone for the evening. Speaking during the public comment session of the meeting, Palu offered thanks to the healthcare district and specifically Orthopedic doctors Mark Robinson and Richard Meredick, who for the past several seasons volunteered their time to serve as the team’s sideline doctors during home games.
“This is one of those services that we’ve had for so long that we get a bit complacent about how fortunate we are to have it,” Palu said. “But when we go to other schools and don’t have a sideline doctor, then we realize how great we have it here, so from all of us at Bronco Football, we publicly want to thank Drs. Robinson and Meredick and the District for their support.”
As for on-campus healthcare, NIHD’s Chief Executive Officer Kevin S. Flanigan, MD MBA, said BUHS and NIHD officials have been discussing an opportunity to develop a program that would place a certified healthcare provider on campus one or two days a week. Students could access the provider throughout those days for state-authorized healthcare issues.
While this already has been discussed at two different BUHS Board of Education meetings, this was the first time it came before the NIHD Board. After the meeting, Dr. Flanigan noted that this was a natural next step. “It is important to get board approval to move from the concept phase to the development phase,” he said.

BUHS Superintendent Barry Simpson told the NIHD Board that the school’s current healthcare clerk can do some things for the students, such as managing diabetes medications and providing First Aid.
“But the idea that we could actually have a healthcare professional on-site where our students can come on their turf and speak to the professional about those things that they are often too afraid or too nervous to talk to anyone else about is an exciting opportunity that we would want to support,” Simpson said.
Simpson noted the school board had made no final decision of any kind on this issue. “This is a big proposition for our community, and we want to do this slowly and make sure our parents are aware of the topics surrounding this idea.”
In an interview following Wednesday’s meeting, Dr. Flanigan said, “NIHD could not be more proud to build upon our mission statement of ‘One Team, One Goal, Your Health.’ Now as we build upon our teamwork with the school district, we gain the opportunity to improve healthcare access to our communities’ adolescents and therefore their health.”

John Schwab field rehab underway

BUHS football field renovation begins

Weeds have been treated and new irrigation infrastructure is being installed.  Bishop Unified School District Superintendent Barry Simpson updated the board of trustees at this weeks regular meeting.  “Its something that needs to be done.  What we found is really two issues with the field.  First it gets a lot of use, following football season we roll right into our soccer season.  By the time the soccer season is done, we have really pounded that field, the grass is pretty much gone, to be quite honest, its almost unsafe.”

To give the main field time to rest the school has been working with the City of Bishop to install a practice field in the rear of the city park.  Due to the ongoing drought, that effort has stalled as the city is holding off seeding the new field.  Simpson is hopeful the new city park field will be planted this fall.

Superintendent Simpson notes the second reason the field is suffering is due to a poor irrigation system.  “The irrigation system was really not meeting the needs of that field, we were not getting the coverage from the sprinklers, and so we were not getting the kind of regrowth that we needed.”

To address the irrigation system, new infrastructure in being installed.  The track and field are currently closes as open trenches exist near the finish line of the track and the length of the 50-yard line.  Following the irrigation upgrade field treatments will continue.

“There are some applications to get rid of the weeds that have taken hold, that is going on now.  Following the irritation system installation  and getting sprinklers up and running, we will do some aeration , over-seeding , and apply fertilizer.  We are working with two local companies, they feel we can defiantly bring that field back and get it ready for the mid august start of football season.”

The first scheduled home game for the Broncos is set for Friday, August 28th.  The Broncos will open at home with Whittier Christian.
