Coaches Comments, Bob Church, “Both Trona and Big Pine came into last night’s game undefeated in Hi-Lo League play, so the winner would put themselves in the driver’s seat for Hi-Lo League Champions, with three league games to play. The Lady Warriors half court trap was too much for Trona early on with all nine Lady Warriors playing in the first period. The Lady Warriors lead after one period was12-6. The Lady Warriors stepped up the defense, again creating numerous turnovers and then capitalizing as they scored 19 in the quarter to Trona’s zero (0).At half, Lady Warrios point guard Lauren Simpson had 14 points to lead the way, but tight defense, especially by Paaku’u Dewey, who had 7 first half steals, was certainly key. Halftime score was 31-6 in favor of Big Pine. In the third and fourth quarter, Big Pine tried some different rotations with people in unfamiliar roles and the Tornadoes outscored Big Pine 30-24. At one point in the third period, Big Pine led by as many as 27 points. Obviously, I was very happy with our play in the first half, especially on “D”. We still missed several easy shots, but overall, we ran the offense and defensive scheme well. It was a nice win and all 9 girls definitely had a hand in it. We’ll just need to convert more of our transition opportunities. Also I was happy with the improvement in free throw shooting, as we made five out of eleven on the night.”
Big Pine improves to 5-0 in Hi-Lo league play.
