Bishop Union Mathletes compete at Trona

Bishop Union Mathletes do work in Trona

On January 13, 2016 the BUHS JV Mathletes competed in Trona and turned in their strongest performance to date. The Bronco’s came in second place out of the nine schools competing with 26 points, trailing first place Desert by a single point. Seventy students competed in total, individually solving difficult math problems in a timed setting to earn points for their team.

BUHS was led by Jim Tomasek, who earned seven points to take home an individual second place ribbon. Carter Silva and Jennifer Velazquez each earned six points and tied for a third place individual performance. Other Bronco team members contributing points were Dylan Fitt, Jeanine Lomaintewa, Arianna Pope, Jake Graves, Tami Lee, and Sam Marcinko.

The Broncos are coached by BUHS math instructor Mrs. DeeDee Buchholz, who was excited about the team’s performance, saying “I see each player improving both his or her math skills and ability to compete in a high pressure situation. This was their strongest meet yet and they worked great as a team.” The JV Broncos have just one meet to go in Boron on February 24th.
