Bishop Union High School Mathletes open season with a win
Submitted by Kathy Zack:
The BUHS Varsity Mathletes team started the 2015/16 year with a decisive first place finish at the September 16th meet held in Tehachapi. Ten schools and 74 students competed in the meet, with the individual students on the team completing difficult math problems in a timed setting.
Bishop earned first place with a score of 35 points, followed by perennial rival Tehachapi, who scored 31 points, and Rosamond with a score of 30. Taking home top honors for the Broncos were senior Jamie Shultz, who earned an almost perfect score with nine points, followed by junior Duncan Reid with eight points, and David Chavez, Logan Stephenson, and Samantha Hess who each earned six points. Also competing and scoring points for the team were Liam Grah, William Moore, Makayla McDevitt, and Emily Ball.
Shultz’s nine points earned her 1st place individual in the overall meet, Reid earned 2nd place overall, and Chavez, Hess and Stephenson earned individual 4th place finishes. The Mathletes are coached by BUHS math instructor Mrs. DeeDee Buchholz, who was delighted with the team’s work, saying “I am impressed with both the varsity and the junior varsity teams this year. Both teams are filled with motivated students who are working very hard!”
The next varsity meet will be held on October 21 at Rosamond
