Bishop Library Open House

Ride that wave of back-to-school excitement and stop on by the Bishop Library’s open house party on Friday, September 25 from 3-6 PM. They will be celebrating the conclusion of their summer reading programs and honoring all the wonderful kids and adults who participated in StoryTime and the Elementary Reading Group. They’ll be dishing up book-themed snacks, drinks, games, and there may even be a piñata…

The Bishop Library would also like to invite parents and/or legal guardians to visit the nearest library with their children to sign up for a library card as September is Library Card Sign-Up Month! There are six county libraries in Inyo County: Bishop, Big Pine, Independence, Lone Pine, Furnace Creek, and Tecopa, so stop by any of them to sign up for a library card! Librarians think that a library card may very well be the most important school supply of all, and studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

While there is no minimum age to get a library card, children must be able to write their full name on the application card. A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign the registration card and assume fiscal responsibility for the child in the case of overdue fines, damage to borrowed materials, or non-returned items. To get a library card the Inyo County Free Library requires two items: photo ID to verify legal name (of the parent or legal guardian) and a piece of mail to verify current address.

As an added bonus, kids who sign up for a library card or show a librarian their card during the open house will be allowed to take home a free book! The library will also waive the lost card fee of $0.50 and issue a free replacement card to existing library patrons during the open house!
