Bishop Bronco Wrestling
By Coach Mark Hodges
Last Saturday the Bishop Bronco Wrestling team traveled to Anaheim to wrestle in the Esperanza tournament. The Bronco team consisted of:
Freshman Nolan Conway at 106 lbs
Sophomore Joseph Mayhugh at 145 lbs
Junior Angel Santana at 160 lbs
Junior Orlando Ruelas at 182 lbs
Freshman Nolan Conway, wrestling at 106 lbs, lost his first match but came back strong in his second match. He scored 8 points and was ahead in the match but ended up getting pinned.
Sophomore Joseph Mayhugh wrestled at 145 lbs. With state‐ranked wrestlers at 145 lbs, it was the toughest weight class of the tournament. Joseph dominated his first opponent scoring 5
near‐falls and although he wrestled well, his next two opponents were able to beat him.
Junior Angel Santana, wrestling at 160 lbs, took on the second‐seeded wrestler in his bracket, beating him in a major decision 13‐1. Unfortunately, it was a Pyrrhic victory as Angel got injured
during the match and was unable to continue wrestling.
Junior Orlando Ruelas at 182 lbs lost both his matches, but showed improvement in his second match.
Coach Shawn Joseph said, “It was good to see the guys bounce back from the Kern Valley dual and every wrestler showed improvement.”
The Bronco with the best record this season is Junior Angel Santana with a record of 8 ‐ 1 with 6 pins.
The Broncos next action will be a home dual meet against Rosamond on January 22nd.
