CIF game recap

This past Friday night the Bishop Broncos traveled to Corcoran High School for the CIF central section division 5 playoffs. Bishop, awarded the #9 seed, drove 292 miles to take on the #8 seed Panthers. The winner rewarded with a trip to #1 seed Farmersville. Both teams entered the 1st round game following league championship games the week prior. Bishop fell to rival Kern Valley while Corcoran defeated Sierra Pacific claiming the east sequoia league title.
Corcoran had the early momentum picking off a Bronco pass and returning it to the Bishop 10-yard line. Nico Portillo started his special night with the first of 5 touchdown passes putting the Panthers up 7-0. Corcoran would force a Bronco fumble on Bishop’s next possession and the game looked like it was unraveling on the road team. Sophomore Linebacker Sean Brown would turn the game around for the Broncos returning a Panther fumble 60-yards for a touchdown. The dynamic play jumped started the Bishop sideline pulling the game even at 7-7.
Bishop’s defense came right back forcing their second consecutive take away. Junior Logan Stephenson picked off a Portillo pass setting up the Broncos at the Panther 16-yard line. Senior quarterback Clyde McCoy hit Jarod Dossy to convert on third and long setting up the Broncos scoring opportunity. Ty Tucker would finish the drive with a 1 yard touchdown run. Up 14-7 the Broncos allowed back to back scoring drives by the Panthers as Corcoran pulled ahead 21-14 at halftime.
Corcoran opened the second half scoring with a 83-yard march capped by a Portillo touchdown pass. Bishop responded with their most impressive drive covering 62-yards, all on the ground, all by Ty Tucker. The senior running back rumbled 47-yards, them 15-yards pulling Bishop within striking distance at 27-21. The Broncos offensive line opened nice running lanes for Tucker. The line includes tackles Scott Sonke and Ryan Rennie, guards Brandon Forrest and freshman Tony Marquez and center Cross DeLamora.
The fourth quarter settled into a defensive battle with the Panther D striking a big blow picking off a Bronco pass late in the 4th quarter. The turnover looked like a death blow to the Broncos but the Bishop defense held strong forcing Corcoran to make a decision on 4th and 5 at the Bishop 20. The Panthers put the ball in the hands of their senior quarterback Nico Portillo who connected with Da’Shaun Henderson for the games final score. The 5th touchdown pass of the game for Portillo put Corcoran on top 33-21 with 1:24 left in the game.
