The numbers are staggering.  Lone Pine Basketball’s senior duo of Brad Greene and Ryan Cappello put together an amazing run.  In their four year varsity basketball careers the Golden Eagles won 88 games.  In their senior campaign Lone Pine finished with a 22-6 record and a trip to the CIF southern section division 6 final four.  For their efforts, both Greene and Cappello have been named to the CIF-Southern Section SCIBCA Boys Basketball team, Division 6.

During their run at Lone Pine the Golden Eagles won three Desert Mountain League titles.  As Freshman, Lone Pine finished as runners up in the DML with a 9-3 record.  Lone Pine would drop just two DML games in the next three seasons.

This past season Greene averaged 19.5 points per game and 14.7 rebounds per game.  Cappello scored 20.1 points per game while pulling down 9.4 rebounds per contest.  The 6-11 Brad Greene has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball next year at UC Irvine while Ryan Cappello is now the ace of the pitching staff for the Lone Pine baseball team.

Lone Pine and Big Pine play league games

February 10, 2016

Big Pine High School finished out it’s regular season schedule Tuesday night while Lone Pine celebrated senior night.  The Big Pine girls put the finishing touches on a perfect Hi-Lo league campaign and the Lone Pine boys avenged their lone Desert Mountain League loss setting up a winner take all championship game at Silver Valley Thursday night.

It wasn’t one of Big Pine Lady Warrior’s best games of the season, as missed layup opportunities early on prevented Big Pine from having an even bigger lead than the 16-6 margin they had after one period of play.  A couple of missed defensive assignments allowed Immanuel to tie the score early on at 4 to 4, but then Big Pine went on a 12 to 2 run to close out the first period.

Paaku’u Dewey had 5 points in the period, thanks to a long 3 pointer and Lauren Simpson did as she has done several times this year- nail a long 3 at the buzzer.  In the quarter, Simpson had 7 points.

After one half of play, Big Pine led by 16 points, 24-8, as the Lady Warrior’s defense held Immanuel Christian to two free throws made. AnahKee Mason led Big Pine scorers with 4 points in the quarter.  Just like the first half of play, all nine girls got playing time in the third period, with seven Lady Warriors scoring- six with baskets and one with a free throw.  Again, rotating the nine players in and out in the fourth period led to some missed assignments, as the Crusaders outscored the Lady Warriors 11-10. The Simpson sisters, Kaylee and Lauren, would each hit deep 3 pointers, while leading the Lady Warriors in scoring in the final quarter. Kaylee had 3 points while Lauren would put in 5 of her game high 16 points.

Coaches Comments, “It was most definitely ugly at times, with missed layups, missed  free throws and missed defensive assignments, but I really can’t complain, because this group really has been a pleasure and so much fun to coach. There are no petty jealousies, they’re having fun and they know that at times they really can be good. They are very unselfish. Winning is contagious and they certainly have worked hard at times to get to where they are right now.”

The BP Lady Warrior’s Basketball Team moved to 6-0 Friday night, but not before being whistled for an incredible 30 fouls. BP held the Crusaders from Immanuel Christian scoreless until there was less than 1 second remaining in the first period. A Lady Crusader received three free throws on what was actually a pass, but was ruled a 3-point shot attempt. The Crusader made two of the three free throws, with 0.6 seconds left in the quarter. In the first half alone, Immanuel Christian was awarded 20 free throws, making only 6. With their two first half baskets, Immanuel Christian found itself trailing by only 9 points, 19-10. In that first half, six different Lady Warriors scored.

In the second half, Lady Warrior Gena Lewis found teammate AnahKee Mason for five of her seven 2nd half baskets and Big Pine’s lead would grow to 27 points early in the 4th quarter. Also scoring in the 2nd half were Cassie Meza (3 pts), Paaku’u Dewey (4 pts), Lauren Simpson (5 pts), Gena Lewis (2 pts).

Big Pine’s defense would hold Immanuel Christian’s best offensive player without a bucket until about two minutes left in the game, when she hit a deep 3-pointer. For the game, Immanuel would shoot 34 free throws.

Warrior Coach Bob Church“This was really a frustrating game, in that it should have been a much easier win than it was. Immanuel was really up for us with a big crowd, but the team and I really do have to thank our great supporters who made the trip. We had a bunch of people down there. They really were supportive and helped energize our girls to overcome some unique adversity.”
