Bishop Union Girls Basketball wins HDL Championship

Bronco Girls beat rival KV going 8-0

by Arnie Palu
February 17, 2016

Bishop Union High School girls basketball secured a perfect 8-0 High Desert league season with a impressive 59-47 win Tuesday night at rival Kern Valley.  Kern Valley’s packed gymnasium was hoping the Broncs could split the HDL crown with Bishop, but the Broncos used great team defense, clutch 3-point shooting, and steady 4th quarter free-throw shooting securing back to back HDL basketball championships.

The Broncos overcame a rocky start Tuesday night including a scary moment for MVP candidate Maria Jimenez.  In the games opening minutes, Jimenez grabbed one of her 16 rebounds before falling flat on her back, with her head smacking the hardwood.  Jimenez stayed down on the court for several tense moments before making a wobbly trip to the Bronco bench.  With Jimenez restricted to the sideline, Kern Valley moved ahead 13-11 at the end of the 1st quarter.

In the second quarter Bishop seniors Sabrina Barlow and Cienna Martinez sparked the Bronco offense.  Martinez connected on the first of her three 3-point baskets giving Bishop Union a 14-13 lead.  The Broncos would never look back.  Barlow, expending major energy on the defensive end, drilled a clutch 3 helping Bishop Union open a 25-16 lead.  Barlow finished the game with 13 points while drawing the difficult assignment of defending Kern Valley’s Rebecca Gallis.  Gallis, daughter of coach Bill Gallis, finished with a game high 35 points, on 33 shots.   Bishop Union took a 28-20 lead into halftime.

In the second half the Bronco underclassman stepped up big time.  Sophomore point guard Topah Scherer nailed a key 3-point shot and Little Eva Lent dominated the boards pulling down a team high 17 rebounds.  Freshman Drew Dondero provided strong support off the Broncos bench logging 10 rebounds.

Showing the composure of a true champion the Broncos withstood several physical Kern Valley fourth quarter fouls.  Bishop Union calmly took to the free-throw line throughout the 4th quarter with Sabrina Barlow hitting 6 free-throws and Maria Jimenez, Little Eva Lent, and Topah Scherer all connecting on a pair.

First year coaches Tara Auld and Alice Bruck provided steady leadership in the hostile environment guiding Bishop Union to the hard fought victory.  It’s now on to the playoffs where Bishop Union will challenge the field in Division 4 of the CIF Central Section.  The parings will be announced Friday with the Bronco Girls (15-2 overall) figuring to be one of the top seeds.

February 5, 2016

Bishop Union High School Girls soccer improves to 6-0 in High Desert League play.  The win secures a share of the HDL championship as both Frazier Mt and Kern Valley have two losses with just two games to go.  The Broncos HDL dominance continues with the 6-0 shut-out at California City high school Thursday.  The Broncos girls were treated to waffles this past weekend prior to appearing on the Saturday Sports Roundup.  Junior Defender Karla Castilla inspired the “Waffle-Fest” Saturday, and clearly the waffles were key to the victory at California City.  (note-you can listen to the Saturday Sports show featuring the Bronco Girls Soccer team by clicking on the link on the left.)

Bishop Union made quick work of California City Thursday with five more goals from super-freshman Katie Dohnel.  The five goals at Cal City giving Dohnel 47 on the season.  Bronco Defender Ritz Garcia got in on the scoring collecting her first goal of the season.

Bishop Union closes out HDL play with key home matches with Frazier Mt (Tuesday, Feb 9th) and Kern Valley (Thursday, Feb 11th).  Both Frazier and Kern Valley are tied for second in the HDL with 4-2 records.   A win or a tie in either match gives Coach Manny Terrasas and the Broncos the HDL championship.

Coaches Comments, Bob Church, “Both Trona and Big Pine came into last night’s game undefeated in Hi-Lo League play, so the winner would put themselves in the driver’s seat for Hi-Lo League Champions, with three league games to play. The Lady Warriors half court trap was too much for Trona early on with all nine Lady Warriors playing in the first period. The Lady Warriors lead after one period was12-6.  The Lady Warriors stepped up the defense, again creating numerous turnovers and then capitalizing as they scored 19 in the quarter to Trona’s zero (0).At half, Lady Warrios point guard Lauren Simpson had 14 points to lead the way, but tight defense, especially by Paaku’u Dewey, who had 7 first half steals, was certainly key. Halftime score was 31-6 in favor of Big Pine. In the third and fourth quarter, Big Pine tried some different rotations with people in unfamiliar roles and the Tornadoes outscored Big Pine 30-24. At one point in the third period, Big Pine led by as many as 27 points.  Obviously, I was very happy with our play in the first half, especially on “D”.  We still missed several easy shots, but overall, we ran the offense and defensive scheme well. It was a nice win and all 9 girls definitely had a hand in it. We’ll just need to convert more of our transition opportunities. Also I was happy with the improvement in free throw shooting, as we made five out of eleven on the night.”
Big Pine improves to 5-0 in Hi-Lo league play.
