On January 13, 2016 the BUHS JV Mathletes competed in Trona and turned in their strongest performance to date. The Bronco’s came in second place out of the nine schools competing with 26 points, trailing first place Desert by a single point. Seventy students competed in total, individually solving difficult math problems in a timed setting to earn points for their team.
BUHS was led by Jim Tomasek, who earned seven points to take home an individual second place ribbon. Carter Silva and Jennifer Velazquez each earned six points and tied for a third place individual performance. Other Bronco team members contributing points were Dylan Fitt, Jeanine Lomaintewa, Arianna Pope, Jake Graves, Tami Lee, and Sam Marcinko.
The Broncos are coached by BUHS math instructor Mrs. DeeDee Buchholz, who was excited about the team’s performance, saying “I see each player improving both his or her math skills and ability to compete in a high pressure situation. This was their strongest meet yet and they worked great as a team.” The JV Broncos have just one meet to go in Boron on February 24th.

Bishop Union High School Mathletes open season with a win

The BUHS Varsity Mathletes team started the 2015/16 year with a decisive first place finish at the September 16th meet held in Tehachapi. Ten schools and 74 students competed in the meet, with the individual students on the team completing difficult math problems in a timed setting.
Bishop earned first place with a score of 35 points, followed by perennial rival Tehachapi, who scored 31 points, and Rosamond with a score of 30. Taking home top honors for the Broncos were senior Jamie Shultz, who earned an almost perfect score with nine points, followed by junior Duncan Reid with eight points, and David Chavez, Logan Stephenson, and Samantha Hess who each earned six points. Also competing and scoring points for the team were Liam Grah, William Moore, Makayla McDevitt, and Emily Ball.
Shultz’s nine points earned her 1st place individual in the overall meet, Reid earned 2nd place overall, and Chavez, Hess and Stephenson earned individual 4th place finishes. The Mathletes are coached by BUHS math instructor Mrs. DeeDee Buchholz, who was delighted with the team’s work, saying “I am impressed with both the varsity and the junior varsity teams this year. Both teams are filled with motivated students who are working very hard!”
The next varsity meet will be held on October 21 at Rosamond

After an eight month season that began in September and ended in April, the BUHS Varsity Mathletes finished their last meet of the year on April 29 and ended the year with a strong second place finish in a ten member league. Tehachapi won the league, followed by Bishop, and third place went to Rosamond.
Bishop’s individual Varsity team members also garnered honors, with four members earning total scores that placed them in the top 15 out of the 81 students who competed. Junior Jamie Shultz earned an individual fourth place finish, seniors Olivia Grah and Colton Riesen tied for 12th place, and junior David Chavez came in 15th. The Mathletes are coached by BUHS math teacher Mrs. DeeDee Buchholz who said, “This is a great group of kids. They work hard and try their best, and I am very proud of the overall team scores. Both Varsity and JV earned second place overall in the league. While doing an outstanding job academically, this team showed great character all season long. It is a ture pleasure to coach them.” The Mathletes Award Ceremony is on Tuesday, May 19 at 5:30 in the BUHS Auditorium.
