Bronco Soccer @ Rosamond

BUHS soccer splits a pair at Rosamond

The Bronco girls beat Rosamond 5-0 Thursday staying perfect in high desert league play.  The Bishop girls dominated with two goals from Evelyn Santana and one goal each from Brenda Gonzalez, Kristy Dohnel and Kailyn Boxley. Boxley also had an assist and Alicia Campos helped out with two assists. Coach Manny Terasas says, “The ladies came out flat in the first half even though they had scored two goals by half time. Evelyn had two great headers into goal from corner kicks. Kailyn Boxley played very well on outside mid, coming across with the ball to the middle and scoring a nice left foot shot. Shelby McKinley stepped up well in the back, coming in early in the first half for an ill player. It was a team effort that won the game. Not our best football but the best team won.”

The varsity boys fell 2-1 to Rosamond in a heartbreaking loss in the final 30 seconds of the match. Rosamond scored first, going up 1-0 midway through the first half. Senior Elijah Alexander equalized 20 seconds later after taking the kick-off straight to goal himself, making it 1-1 at halftime. The score remained tied until just 30 seconds remaining in the match, when Rosamond scored from a lofting ball which cleared goalkeeper Daniel Martinez for the 2-1 loss in the closing seconds of the match. Seniors Joey Griego, Jarod Dossey and Jose Mendez all had a shot on goal, and Elijah Alexander had two shots on goal, scoring one.
The Broncos will have a bye next Tuesday, and return to action at home, against California City on Thursday, February 5th. All are encouraged to come on out and support the Bishop Broncos for their final home matches of the season.

BUHS Soccer dominates Kern Valley

Bishop High Soccer Teams destroy rival Kern Valley

The Bishop Union High School Girls and Boys soccer teams made quick work of rival Kern Valley Tuesday at Bishop High’s John Schwab field.  The win from the Bishop Girls keeps them unbeaten in High Desert League play while the boys bounce back from a tough loss last week to Frazier Mt.

Girls Soccer team soundly beat Kern Valley 5-2.  Bishop was up 4-1 at the half with each team scoring one more goal in the second half.  The two Kern Valley goals are the first allowed in HDL play by the strong Bishop defense.

The Broncos received goals  from Evelyn Santana (2 goals), Alicia Campos, Kristy Dohnel, Brenda Gonzalez, with assists from Kailynn Boxley and a pair of assists from Sara Voss.   The Coaching staff of Manny Terasas and Kathy Mckinley note that Evelyn Santana had a great game, as Kern Valley tried to man to man mark her in the first half but she used her skills to get past them and score twice. Evelyn now sits at the top of the league for goals and points. Other players that did well in the win include Ritz Garcia, Chloe Almeida and Brittany Santana.

The Varsity boys beat Kern Valley 7-1.  Senior Elijah Alexander scored four goals before resting in the second half.  The coaching staff credited Senior Jose “Pepe” Mendez with two excellent goals. Junior Jordan Lopez also had a solid performance, with a goal as well.

Bishop Wrestling at Lancaster

Bishop Bronco Wrestling

Last Saturday the Bishop Bronco Wrestling team traveled to Lancaster to wrestle in the Antelope Valley Wrestling Tournament. This was the last tournament before the High Desert
League Finals which will be held in Bishop on Wednesday, March 11th. The Bronco team consisted of:
Freshman Nolan Conway at 108 lbs
Sophomore Joseph Mayhugh at 147 lbs
Junior Orlando Ruelas at 172 lbs
Freshman Gabe Shoshone at 222 lbs
Freshman Nolan Conway at 108 lbs received a first round bye, putting him into the semi‐finals in just his 5th match as a Bronco. Nolan came out on fire, scoring 2 takedowns and 3 near falls in
an exciting, high‐scoring match. Nolan came out on top, winning by a score of 19‐15. Nolan lost in the finals, but was happy to have earned a 2nd place medal.
Wrestling at 147 lbs., sophomore Joseph Mayhugh started his first match well, but made a crucial error and was pinned by an opponent from Quartz Hill. Joseph dominated his next two opponents, putting him the match for 3rd place against the same Quartz Hill opponent who had pinned him in his first match. Again, Joseph was the more aggressive wrestler and – with no crucial errors this time – pinned his opponent, earning a 3rd place medal.
Junior Orlando Ruelas at 172 lbs was disappointed in his first match where he was pinned, but the coaches were happy that he took his opponent down 2 times. In his 2nd match, Orlando wrestled an exciting match that was tied several times. Late in the last period, with both wrestlers nearly exhausted, Orlando executed a “nearly perfect” takedown to win the match. This win put him in the match for 3rd place, but he was forced to forfeit as he did not feel well.
Freshman Gabe Shoshone, having only wrestled once before, lost both his matches.
Coach Joseph said, “We really liked how some of the wrestlers performed. We aren’t really that interested in wins, what we really want is for the wrestlers to move well, take shots and score
points. ”
The Broncos next action will be an away dual meet against Kern Valley this coming Thursday (January 29th).  Weight ins begin at 4, wrestling at 5pm.

Bishop High sweeps California City

The Bishop Union High School Soccer teams dominated California City Tuesday.  Both the Varsity boys and girls made the road trip to the Raven’s home pitch for High Desert League soccer.  The Boys returning home 3-1 winners and the girls dominating 7-0.

According to Varsity Girls coach Manny Terasas the victory over the Ravens was a resounding win for the Bronco Girls.  Bishop dominated with  27 shots on goal, and zero  shots on goal from Cal City.   According to coach Manny, “Tami Anderson had an outstanding game, she played a quality game in defense.”
The scorers for Bishop were Brenda Gonzalez 2 goals, Kailyn Boxley with 2 goals and 1 assist, Evelyn Santana 1 goal, and 1 assist, Jaden Piper 1 goal, Sara Voss 1 goal, Alicia Campos 2 assists and Tami Anderson 1 assist. The Broncos will now be preparing for a very important match up against what could be their biggest competition in HDL this year, Frazier Mountain at home on Thursday.  The team is asking folks to please come out and support the Bronco Soccer players.

In the Varsity boys match, Cal City came out strong, scoring in the first ten minutes grabbing a 1-0 lead.   The Broncos kept their composure, and equalized on a goal from Alexis Barajas just as the first half ended.
After some adjustments by coach Greg Alexander at half, Bishop shut down the Ravens, who never got another shot on goal.  Senior midfielder Joey Griego provided an assist to fellow senior and leading goal scorer Elijah Alexander to put the Broncos ahead for good.  Alexander slotted home a penalty kick in the closing minutes of the game to end it 3 – 1.
In a dramatic turn of events, Rosamond boy’s varsity was found to have  played an ineligible player in their first two matches, against Bishop and Cal City. CIF rules dictate they forfeit these games, which puts Bishop on top of the High Desert league after two games. The Bronco Boys have a home match this Thursday against Frazier Mountain.  Girls varsity play at 3pm and boys varsity at 5pm.
