Bronco Wrestling vs Kern Valley

Bishop Bronco Wrestling

On Thursday, January 8th, the Bishop Bronco Wrestling team hosted Kern Valley for their first home dual meet of the season. The Bronco team consisted of:
Freshman Nolan Conway at 106 lbs
Sophomore Joseph Mayhugh at 145 lbs
Junior Angel Santana at 160 lbs
Junior Tyler Cox at 170 lbs
Junior Orlando Ruelas at 182 lbs
The meet started with junior Orlando Ruelas at 182 pounds receiving a forfeit.
Next up was freshman Nolan Conway wrestling at 106 lbs in his first ever match. Nolan wrestled enthusiastically, but made a crucial error and got caught and pinned.
Sophomore Joseph Mayhugh wrestled at 145 lbs against the same wrestler that pinned him in last year’s dual meet in Kern Valley. Joe was not feeling well and was able to wrestle the entire 6 minutes, but lost on points.
Junior Angel Santana, wrestling at 160 lbs had his hands full against a senior wrestler with 4 years of experience. Angel was not intimidated and took his opponent down in the first period.
It was a close match until the 3rd period when Angel got two 3‐point near falls and won the match with a 10‐5 decision.
The next match was at 170 pounds where junior Tyler Cox got pinned by a wrestler with a few years of experience.
Coach Joseph said, “It’s always hard when you lose at home, but 4 out our 5 wrestlers are first year wrestlers and it is hard to compete against teams with wrestlers that have 3 or 4 years of experience.”
The Bronco with the best record this season is Junior Angel Santana with a record of 7 ‐ 1 with 6 pins.
The next dual meet will be another home meet, this time against Rosamond on January 22nd.

Bishop Bronco Wrestling at Rosamond

Bishop Bronco Wrestling

Last Tuesday, the Bishop Bronco Wrestling team traveled to Rosamond for for their first league action of the season. The Bronco team consisted of:
Sophomore Joseph Mayhugh at 152 lbs
Junior Angel Santana at 160 lbs
Junior Tyler Cox at 170 lbs
Junior Orlando Ruelas at 182 lbs
Freshman Gabe Shoshone at 220 lbs
The meet started with Angel Santana wrestling at 160 pounds against a wrestler called “the strongest kid on the team” by his coach. Angel was able to take his opponent down but was
unable to pin him in the first period.  After a flurry of activity in the second period, with the score 7‐3 in Angel’s favor, Angel was able to pin his opponent.
The next match was at 170 pounds where Tyler Cox lost the match, but he did get the first takedown of the match.
At 183 pounds, the Rosamond team had no wrestler, so Orlando Ruelas received a forfeit.
Freshman Gabe Shoshone was very nervous before his first match as a Bronco, but those fears quickly disappeared when Gabe stepped on the mat in the 220 pound weight class. Gabe quickly took his opponent down and turned him to his back earning near fall points. Before his pinned his opponent in the 2nd period, Gabe had racked up an 11‐0 lead.
Rosamond had wrestlers in the next 5 weight classes, so the Broncos had to forfeit these matches, giving Rosamond a commanding 36‐18 lead.  In the last “official” match of the meet, sophomore Joseph Mayhugh completely dominated his opponent at 152 pounds. Upon reviewing the video of the match later, Head Coach Shaun Joseph said that “Joe used every move that we’ve taught him in that match. It was fun to watch.” After racking up a 15‐0 lead, Joe pinned his opponent in the 2nd period.  The meet ended with the score Rosamond 36 – Broncos 24, but with the Broncos winning 3 of
the 4 matches wrestled, the Broncos felt like they were the winners.
After the official matches, two exhibition matches were held: Junior Orlando Ruelas at 182 pounds wrestled one of the highest scoring matches seen in several years, points being scored so fast it was hard to keep track of them. In the end, Orlando won by default.
In the other exhibition match, Joseph Mayhugh dominated yet another Rosamond wrestler and pinned him in the 2nd period.
The Bronco with the best record this season is Junior Angel Santana with a record of 6 ‐ 1 with all 6 wins being pins.
The Broncos next face Kern Valley at home on January 8th.
