The City of Bishop is sponsoring a Bishop Union High School Football Camp! BUHS JV coaching staff will teach the fundamentals and skills of football to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. This will be a no helmets, no pads, and no contact camp. The camp will be April 14th-17th; from 3pm to 5pm, cost is $20 per participant. Register through April 10th at Bishop City Hall. Pre-registration is required.
All funds will support the Bishop Union High School Football Program. For more information call BUHS Varsity Football Coach Arnie Palu at (760) 937-4929, be sure to leave a message.

Maybe it was the energizing long bus ride. Maybe Coach Palu has found something for these kids to rally on. Either way, the Bishop Bronco’s traveled to the “other side of the mountain” and put a  Central Cal team in their place last Thursday night.

Molina,Rennie. Can’t keep a good horse down.

Forget common opponents, means nothing. All the Broncos have to do is get on the bus, drive for hours and beat a team that we have no experience with. Sounds easy enough right?

Jerry Mendez has been a SOLID kicker all year.

When the dust settled, the Bronco’s got back on that energizing bus with a big win over Caruthers 49-16.

Senior leader and QB Ryan Graves played out of his mind. Ryan likes long bus rides.  Passing, Graves went 8 for 9 with 176 yards. And when Graves wasn’t passing the ball, he was shredding the Caruthers defense for 170 yards and 3 TD’s on the ground.

Graves with daylight.

Izaak Morganstein is playing his last season too. He’s logged a few miles on a bus. Bring it on! Izaak caught 143 yards worth of real estate with 2 TD’s.

Smothering defense works.

#18 Arturo Lemus is fun to watch. And we get to watch him for a couple more years. Lemus is a Sophomore. Lemus ran for a TD, and on “D” he had an interception and 9 total tackles.

Sophomore Arturo Lemas was all over the field on offense and defense.

The Bronco defense deserves credit. They’ve played through diversity. They play tough,Bronco defense like the good ole days. Double digit tackles in this playoff game goes to Mike Molina(12) and Lorenzo Parra (11). We shall call them Horses.

A small group from the stable. Molina, Rennie, Parra and Martinez.
Freshman Luke McClean got the call up from JV. I would say he enjoyed the bus ride.
JR Sam Moose getting the tackle.

With the Bronco’s ranking of 11th, we will get back on that energizing bus, we will wave to Caruthers as we pass that school on Highway 99 and head to Firebaugh. Common opponents ? Who cares, just keep the bus rolling.

Bishop’s JV team wins. That’s what they do all year long. This victory was tight. With the score knotted at ZERO-ZERO going into the 4th quarter, Wesley Pettet changes the score and the outcome of the game with a rushing TD AND the 2 point conversion. Bishop wins 8-0 !!

Bishop’s Jon Torres drags a Cal City player for a few extra yards.
This Cal City pass was intended for #18 but it didn’t make it. Luke McClean grabs the INT.

A defensive game requires defensive pictures.

Bronco Varsity Down’s Cal City

Cal City scored first, Cal City scored last, but the game was won by the Bishop Broncos. Besides a very sluggish 4th quarter by the Broncos which let Cal City drop 20 points on them, the Bishop boys prevailed by a final score of 34-28. Cal City came out of the blocks firing and scoring on their first drive of the game. With an 8-0 lead within the first 5 minutes, this was the only time they would see the end zone until the 4th quarter. Then QB Ryan Graves and company took over.

Graves with one of his 23 passes in the game.

The offensive game was going great with a score of 21-8 Broncos at halftime.

Alan Torres making the catch from Ryan Graves.

Defense has been solid all year. With Lorenzo Parra out from injury the “D” stepped up to keep the Ravens out of the end zone through the third quarter.

Top Defensive Broncos

Molina – 10 tackles,    Morganstein – 9 tackles, Torres – 9 tackles, Joe Mayhugh – 12 tackles.

Mmoran West breaking up a big passing play from Cal City.
Defense by committee. Its the Bronco way.
#50 Mike Molina had 8 solo tackles. He was on point on this play.

Joe Mayhugh had a big intercepting in the 3rd QTR to stop a Raven drive.

Mayhugh stopping a Raven drive with this INT.

Passing – Ryan Graves 13 for 23 for 224 yards with 1 TD pass

Receiving – Izaak Morganstein had 5 receptions for 140 yards  with one TD.

Nothing but real estate for Izaak after this completion from Graves.

Rushing –  Cal City bottles up Sean Brown on this night. Brown rushing for only 26 yards on 11 carries with one rushing touchdown.

Arturo Lemus carried the ball 3 times for 72 yards and a score and QB Ryan Graves ran 10 times for 73 yards with 2 TD’s.

One of Ryan’s 2 TD runs.
Sophomore Arturo Lemus making the tackle. This kid is a player !!
A GREAT diving catch for a TD in the 4th quarter for Cal City receiver Ty Jones.
Ravens Sophomore Perrion Grays makes a catch to keep a Cal City Drive going in the 4th quarter.

The Bronco’s now must wait. Frazier Mountain will not field a team for the Bronco’s last game of the season. Playoff pairings are soon to follow.

The Bronco JV team did not have to go through what the Varsity team did with the on-sides kicks. Just once, on the opening kick off…. If you can keep the opponent from scoring, they have no chance to on-side kick ! So that’s what the JV’s did, shutting out the Desert Scorpions 32-0.

Luke !!!

Luke McClean continues to lead the offense, putting up points quickly and often. Luke had 8 completions for 84 yards a 1 TD pass.

Luke launching a bomb!

Luke also ran for 2 scores with 75 yards rushing.

Wesley Pettet carried the ball 9 times for 50 yards with 1 Touchdown.

Wesley Pettet’s TD run from 10 yards out.

Tian DeBeaupre played a solid game for the JV’s with 67 all purpose yards and one spectacular interception as seen in the 3 photos below.

Another fine effort by the Bronco JV team with the win over the Desert Scorpions.

Homecoming Loss for the Varsity Broncos

Tough Loss to a very good team.

Honestly, Desert did things weird. They did things different. They do not punt , and when they did….it was a failure. They do not kick off, they try on-sides kicks every time. Weird !!! But it worked for them this time. Giving the Broncos great field position all night with their failed on-sides kicks, the Bishop Broncos just did not take advantage of the field position.  The rare times Desert converted their on-sides kicks, they would march down the field and score. And score they did, with a final score of 54-36.

Some pictures from the game…

Hunter Waasdorp getting in the backfield and making the tackle.
The workhorse of the Desert Scorpion backfield goes to this big, strong young man… # 2 Lontrelle Diggs. He was a force and hard to tackle.
Sean Brown had his hands full all night on offense and defense.
Hunter Waasdorp finds out how tough it is to tackle Lontrelle Diggs 1 on 1.

Izaak Morganstein hits him low .. Great choice !!

Without making excuses, the Broncos were banged up with some key players out. With Lorenzo Parra going out early, the Bronco defense was missing another key link.

Great TD run by QB Ryan Graves in the 1st Quarter.
Sophomore Tuli Lemus making one of his many tackles.
When Desert had time to pass, they had many serious receivers to throw to.

Bishop was held to just 110 yards rushing for the night by a stingy Desert defense. Senior Ryan Graves was 10 for 20 passing with 2 TDs passes and 2 rushing TD’s.

Desert’s offense seemed backed up many times during the contest, but they managed to find ways to pick up yardage of 3rd and long…
Lemus making the catch from Graves and getting ready to take on Diggs.
Bronco’s night was summed up with this shot. Just out of the reach.

We are at home next Friday Night against Cal City… Come on out and support the Bishop Broncos.

It was all about the Senior class of 2017 when the final whistle blew on an exciting night of Football for the ladies. Who said Football is a man’s sport? These Juniors and Seniors might be friends off the Gridiron but when this game started, the friendship’s ended.

The Seniors

The Juniors

The Seniors scored first with a great run from tailback Kali Barrett.

Kali with her TD run.
The Senior TD celebration begins… 6-0 Seniors.

The 2 point conversion failed so it was 6-0 Seniors. The feisty Juniors came right back with a score of their own and then junior Sara Voss kicked the extra point which gave the Juniors the halftime lead of 7-6.

Sara Voss running the right side all night long. Here being chased by Senior Sarah Desbrosses.

Personal stats were not available at press time but Sara Voss was in BEASTMODE for the Juniors the entire game.

When the dust settled (and a phantom whistle being blown by a ref taking away a Junior touchdown) The Senior class prevailed with a final score of 12-7.

Now to the pictures….

And there were cheerleaders……

Bringing the crowd to their feet with this riveting halftime show.

Back to the action……….

Beth Morgan rockin the right side on this big run in the first half.
More running room for Beth Morgan.
Dani Derousseau was all over the field for the Seniors on defense. Here, she breaks up a pass from Junior QB Erika Ellis intended for Gracie Sandoval.. Sarah Desbrosses look on.
Madalyn Batchelder applies some serious Senior pressure on Junior QB Erika Ellis.
When Coach Alan Torres gives the punt signal……….
……..Senior Punter Wendy Reynolds kicks the pigskin.
The Senior Defense strikes a pose for me during halftime.
Almost a nice pass play from Erika Ellis to Sara Voss for the Juniors.
Voss again trying to shake Dani Derousseau for a big gain. Dani did not let that happen.
#15 Junior Xochilt Martinez shakes and bakes up the middle.

Junior QB Erika Ellis had her passing game going with 1 TD pass !!

Another big gain for Senior tailback Kali Barrett.
Juniors tried running up the middle… Senior Faith Manriquez was there to stop that attempt.

Bishop Bronco Varsity Football, If you have not had the chance to see this team in action, you are missing out BIG TIME.

Defense was excellent Friday Night

These guys are energetic, exciting, and they show up every Friday Night.

Moran West…Fearless on D
Izaak Morganstein gets the ball inside the post for a Bronco TD

The Broncos took care of business Friday Night against the Rosamond Roadrunners. The final score was 42-7.

Defense was swarming..Led by Lorenzo Parra’s pink socks !

The Bronco defense continues to play hard-nose football. The offense is loaded with weapons for QB Ryan Graves.

Ryan Graves picking up some of his 80 plus yards rushing.

Graves on this night, was on a mission !  8 for 11 passing with 189 yards and 3 TD’s. He ran for 64 yards and 2 scores.

Brown catches a pass from Graves and has plenty of room to run.

Izaak Morganstein ran a punt back 70 yards for a score.  Sean Brown was on a roll with 3 receptions for 87 yards.

Hunter Waasdorp stretches for the goal line.

It was a great game for the Bronco Team.

Again, the pink socks! Enough to scare any defender.

Coming into town for Homecoming is the Desert Scorpions. Come out and support these hard working kids on Friday Night !!!

Bronco JV Running Wild Against the Roadrunners

The loss to KV is ancient history. The Rosamond Roadrunners came to town and the Bronco JV squad sent them packing.  Led by Freshman QB Luke McClean, the Broncos were victorious by a final score of 42-24.

231 total yards on the day for McClean
“O” line doing a stellar job of giving #12 some time to pass.

McClean passed for 84 yards and ran for 147 yards with two scores.

Quick and shifty Jayden Braithwaite picking up some great gains whenever he gets his hands on the ball.

Jayden Braithwaite carried the ball 6 times for 48 yards with one score.

Wesley Pettet stretches for one of his two rushing TD’s.
Again Pettet barrels through a Rosamond defender.

Other Broncos putting points on the board were Jon Torres with a rushing TD and Wesley Pettet had two rushing touchdowns.

One that got away… Roadrunner Ronald Thompson gets behind the Bishop secondary for a sweet TD catch.

Next up – Desert coming to town for Homecoming.
